Often in Civil 3D you have surfaces that represent either grading or road surfaces, or even rock layers underground. Seen below are 4 surfaces that occur below one another. Depending on the visual style controls, the elevation of the surfaces will be displayed on the mouse tooltips if you hover over them and leave the mouse stationary for a little while.

When we view the surfaces from the top and we hover our mouse over the surface, and we are NOT in a visual style control of 2D Wireframe or Wireframe, the elevation of the topmost surface is reported as a tooltip.

In a visual style control of 2D Wireframe or Wireframe all the surfaces have their surface elevations displayed.

If you wanted to report the surface elevations on any surface, regardless of the visual style control, they the SHOWCT command. You select the relevant surface from a dropdown list and then the coordinates display.

In preparation, make sure you set the general options to show tooltips.

The layer containing the topography must also be switched on and unfrozen. This may vary on the layers that have been set for Civil 3d. In the UK standard it will be different.

Lastly, every surface you want to tool tip must have its property set as such. Right mouse click (RMC) on the surface in the prospector on the toolspace and then set the property appropriately.
