Civil 3D Increase Performance Using Surface Detail Level

Civil 3D surfaces can be quite complex and place a strain on your computer resources. Then you may have more than one surface that you need to consider. You may find that quite challenging from a modeling perspective. Even though Civil 3D 2026 makes visualization of surfaces a lot easier by viewing the object within the model viewer, normal navigation can still be impacted significantly.

It is therefore important for you to know that you can set the surface to display either in a low or a high level of detail. You could do so at a drawing, object or element level. In this video we show you how to achieve the desired results for a variety of services by setting the default values and overriding per element when necessary. You can see the differences when you zoom out: the surface appears to have less detailed. Zoom in and the surface increases in detail again.
