This blog follows on from the earlier blogs showing how to sign up for the BIM 360 Design Trial and to administer the account.

To create a new project, navigate to the Projects tab of BIM 360 Account Administration. Click on “Add”.
If you are in a hurry to get started, fill in only the mandatory information (You can always edit the information later).
Scroll to the bottom and click “Save & continue”
After the project is created, it is necessary to activate the services and assign administrators for these services that are available through subscription. As they are assigned, they will be notified by email. Note there are a few choices to be made at the inception od he project. On “Document Management” it is possible to copy the folder structure from another project by choosing an existing project.
One may either choose the new generation “Model Coordination” over classic “Glue. Make sure you are informed by your supply chain and BIM experts which is preferable for the project at hand.
Also choose between new generation “Field Management” and classic “BIM 360 Field”.
Scroll to the bottom and click on “Finish”
Open the project by clicking on the name:
Add members to the project (enter the email addresses and then assign Company, Role and Services by member). Click on “Add to Project”. Members will be notified by email that they were added to the project.
In my experience, on project initiation, the project does not recognize users by their role immediately unless they are first unassigned the role and then reassigned the role.
I prefer to do the Member assignation in a two-step process. First get the project to recognize the roles by doing the above for one or two members, then add members en masse later after assigning “members” permission to the project fodders by either company or role.
After this is done, hit refresh on the browser (otherwise “Document Management” will not be available for selection)
Select “Document Management” from the menu.
Browse to the folder of interest, right mouse click (RMC) on it and select “Permissions”.
Permissions may be assigned by company, role or individual (overrides permissions given by company or role). Also note that child folders inherit the permissions of the parent folder, and at best the permissions may be decreased, not increased. If increased permission is required as one is drilling down into the folder structure, then one must assign permissions at the folder in question directly (folder by folder). Because user can traditionally only see the folders they are assigned to, I use a naming system that exposes the “path” or the folder. A distinction can be made for “AX1” in the following two names:
- BIM_030_Shared_BIM_AX1
- BIM_030_Shared_CAD_AX1
When the permissions dialogue opens, click on “Add”
Start typing the role and then select it from the list that appears:
Then select the permission level for the role.
Click on “Add”
As can be seen, users are now listed under their role. Any newly added members will be listed under their roles as well.
In the blog following this one, we will look at how to create Revit Design files (workshared in the cloud).
