Revit 2021 – User History of Elements

It is a question that is often asked by managers of a modeling/authoring team: can I see the history of an element? Usually, this is to educate members who perhaps did not author the model to expectation.

One way to do this is to switch one of the workset display modes: any one of the four options will do.

If one now hovers over an element, there is information about the element that is displayed that is over and above what is normally the case. Interestingly, this is the same information that is available to programmers (the tooltip information).

One can get hold of the same information through Dynamo. What would be the benefit of doing this though if one can just hover? Well, in this case, some managers might want to get a sense of who did what and run it against all the elements in a model.

The pyRevit add-in also has some information to offer on an element through the Team tools “Who did that” function:

Select the element to display.

This is the result:

The topic is discussed in more detail in this blog, although it seems there is no way to get hold of further historic information about elements from the Revit Application Programming Interface (API).

After uploading the model to BIM 360, it is also clear from inspection the history of the element is not visible.
