Revit Geometry Missing in Navisworks

Introduction

Navisworks seems to be relatively unknown in the structural engineering space, and at first glance, this makes some sense. As structural engineers, we’re generally not as concerned with clashes between different services. This responsibility often falls to architects and MEP engineers/designers. If there are clashes, it might seem like they don’t have much to do with us. After all, all the structural components are typically represented in the architect’s model anyway.

However, upon closer consideration, clashes can directly impact the elements we’re responsible for. Take, for instance, the reinforcement in a concrete beam. The position of a core, where services need to pass through, is crucial and can significantly affect stability depending on its size and location. If additional holes need to be cored, cutting through reinforcement is a major issue that must be avoided. And the examples don’t stop there. I hope this brief introduction clarifies my interest in Navisworks.

Revit Geometry Missing in Navisworks

I recently tried appending a Revit model into Navisworks and was surprised to see only the gridlines. As someone unfamiliar with Navisworks, I wasn’t sure where to start. Fortunately, with a bit of research, I found the solution.

To resolve this:

  1. Open Navisworks and click on the Navisworks icon in the top-left corner (usually where the File dropdown is located).
  2. Select the Options button.
  3. In the Options dialogue window, expand File Readers and click on Revit.
  4. Finally, under the Convert dropdown, select Entire Project.

Once this is done, you can proceed with appending a Revit project, and the geometry should appear as expected.
