Autodesk Inventor – Reuse of Historical Data

While creativity in designing and modelling new assemblies and parts is highly valued, it is equally important to develop efficient modelling practices to streamline the time required to complete tasks. From a business perspective, projects are awarded based on the ability to deliver on time and within budget. These operational constraints necessitate the identification of opportunities to optimize workflows and operations.

When there is a history of completed projects, where lessons have been learned and solutions implemented, it becomes increasingly necessary to leverage historical data. There are several methods to create a design copy in Autodesk Inventor, each tailored to different needs:

  1. Design Assistant: This utility allows for the copying, renaming, and replacing of files while maintaining their relationships. It is useful for making changes to parts without affecting the original assembly.
  1. Autodesk Vault:  This tool is only available within Autodesk Vault, both Basic and Vault Professional. This tool assists in managing design data and maintaining relationships between files. It prevents simultaneous changes and promotes collaboration. Within the Vault environment, designs can be copied, files renamed, and drawings updated. There are many options to assist with renaming files, with Find and Replace being particularly useful as sometimes the files being copied can be very random. This allows specific text to be searched and replaced.
  1. iLogic Design Copy Tool: This tool can copy parts, assemblies, and drawings, and even add prefixes or suffixes to file names. It can also delete iLogic rules from the copied files if needed and update the part number for the newly created files.
  1. Pack and Go: This feature packages all files related to a design into a single folder, facilitating the copying and moving of entire projects.
  1. Copy Component Tool:  This tool allows for the copying, reuse, or exclusion of individual components or entire assemblies within Inventor. It is useful for duplicating parts while keeping their references intact, particularly for parts or assemblies without associated 2D drawings.
  1. iCopy: This feature inserts iCopy-authored assemblies that adjust size based on their position in the parent assembly. The assemblies must be authored for iCopy before insertion and are positioned using work geometry or feature patterns.
  2. Place iLogic Component: This feature creates a copy of any part or assembly within the active project file, renaming every part and assembly by adding a suffix. It maintains all constraints and features within the new assembly and parts but is completely non-associative to the original assembly and parts, allowing for edits without affecting the original model files.
  1. Save and Replace/All: This feature creates a copy of the selected part or assembly within the current working assembly. However, if it is an assembly, all the parts and sub-assemblies are not new copies, and changes made within this assembly will affect the original assemblies. This method is excellent for reusing assemblies but requires vigilance and discipline.

Each method has its advantages, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your needs. I hope you find a suitable method to streamline the reuse of existing data within Autodesk Inventor.
