It has been on the wish list of many people I have spoken to over the last few years, and now we can finally permanently sync files to our hard drive using the Desktop Connector version 16 (you must uninstall version 15 before installing version 16).
Why is this important? By default, when you work on a file or link files to your project, they will be downloaded to your hard drive. When you stop working on/with them, they will be unloaded after a set time. See the following article to set this time using Windows Storage Sense.

You can choose how long you want the files to reside on the hard drive if they are not accessed.

The problem occurs when you have a large amount of data that is referenced in your file. If the files are not already downloaded, they need to be downloaded, and this can amount to gigabytes worth of data if things like point clouds are included. Even if you have a fast internet connection, this will take time.
With the Desktop Connector version 16, you can now explicitly specify which files must be permanently synced and updated on your hard drive. Simply right mouse click (RMC) on the file and chose Always keep on this device.

The file will then download and stay on your hard drive.

If you would like to un-sync the file and unload the file from memory, RMC again and chose to Free up space. This will also automatically uncheck Always keep on this device.
