Here are some interesting facts to consider regarding energy usage in the built environment and on planet Earth:
- 40% of construction spend is MEP related
- 53% of Concentrated Solar Panels contractors are MEP contractors
- 40%-60% of energy is consumed by buildings and therefore MEP systems
- 75% of a project’s operational costs in the first 10 years is MEP related
This may be difficult to comprehend at first but consider the scale of the machine that makes up the HVAC and related services in a large project. To anyone who understands the most basic of Engineering principles, this machine requires an enormous amount of power.
And for us in South Africa the implications are not that immediate. Imagine you must regulate the temperature of a building in the desert operating in 50 degrees Celsius! Would you rather be left to the elements? Impossible.
Autodesk is heavily invested in creating software that allow us to build a better world and make anything. Revit used in conjunction with other Autodesk and 3rd party products are used to improve energy efficiency over the life cycle of a building. The Revit Add In, Insight, built on Green Building Studio, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Dynamo and Refinery all work together for delivering optimized building design.
Refinery is the one platform that excites me tremendously. Machine learning, done on Amazon’s servers, is used to deliver generative design solutions, essentially computing optimized multi-variable optimization according to client requirements.
Let’s consider that environmental and geopolitical considerations are heavily dependent on the built environment in general.
And lets all work together to mitigate the impact of our endeavors on the environment. The Amazon is only one of the fires to be extinguished (our ruthless development is another).
