Revit 2023 – LAN Central File as Template

This blog is followed by another, showing how to initiate a new project from a central file acting as a template.

Conventional wisdom states that you should use a rivet template to start a new project from. Now imagine you are a production line manager responsible for setting up the template, however it is necessary for your team to have already defined worksets into which they might place components. This might be necessary because, if you are responsible for designing stores for, say and national retailer, then your template might be close to 1 GB. it would therefore make sense to subdivide the departments in the national retailer and the families that are used to design them into data channels like worksets. You can then switch on each department’s families at the time when you are designing the relevant department.

Instead of saving a template, create a central file on a local area network or on your local hard drive. When the time comes to start a new project, synchronize, and relinquish all the worksets. That updates the central “template” file.  Then copy the file into a new location from which the other teams will then detach from central to save as their own project central file. In this way the relevant families are present within the project are already subdivided into their worksheets and when the file is opened all worksets can be closed so that the amount of information the computer has to process is lessened.

Create and set C:\BIM as the default path for user files.
