I recently presented a Revit structural course here in South Africa and was unpleasantly surprised when I wanted to demonstrate changing the view to a coarse scale such that I could copy columns from their flange midpoints into another location I need to discover that the flange and where thicknesses were showing.
The reason for this is that the stick symbols within the families were not drawn to represent just the shape of the letter I but to have a thickness (as the element is supposed to have within the medium scale).
I raised the issue with Autodesk in a case. The issue was acknowledged and brought to the attention of the developing team, but in the interim you should be aware of this and fix the families so that you may work quickly with the structural elements in plan views set to coarse scale.
