Revit SQLLocalDB Dumper – Template File Not Loading

With a newly installed Autodesk Revit, some users experience issues loading their company template file or projects based on it. When starting a new project, Revit loads the template up to a certain percentage and then hangs indefinitely.

Checking the Revit journal file shows:
DBG_WARN: SQLLocalDB instance is malfunctioning

This indicates Revit cannot interact with the SQLLocalDB instance (Microsoft SQL Server 2014 LocalDB, or 2019 for Revit 2024 and newer).

Revit journal files location:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit <Version>\Journals

Diagnose

Run Command Prompt as Administrator and enter:

fsutil fsinfo sectorinfo C:

Check values for:

  • PhysicalBytesPerSectorForAtomicity
  • PhysicalBytesPerSectorForPerformance

If either is above 4096, the sector size is too large.

Solution

1. Reinstall SQL Server LocalDB (Server date important)

  • Open Control Panel
  • Uninstall product: Microsoft SQL Server 201x Express LocalDB

2. Clear Temporary Files

  1. Close all programs
  2. Run window (Windows key + R)
  3. Enter %temp% and hit enter
  4. Delete all contents of that folder
  5. Reboot PC to clear remaining files in the folder

3. Apply Registry Fix

4. Install Correct SQL LocalDB Version (Ensure that the correct version is re-installed)

Reboot your PC and your Autodesk Revit should work.
