Inventor File Types

The different File Types that is available in Inventor and what they are used for, is a question that gets asked often. As there are sometimes uncertainty about the different file types. Here I will show the different common file types and where you can Find them and explain a bit more about them. First and foremost, the most important file type would be the Inventor Project [. ipj]. This is created to manage file linkage paths. This will ultimately set up your Project for Inventor, with your individual Parts, Assemblies and your Drawings, or Presentations.

Inventor Single Part File[.ipt] is the Individual Parts that has been created. Would consist of your 2D sketches, that has been converted into a 3D object.

The Assembly file [. iam] will consist of different individual Parts that has been assembled to create your final product. With full Assembly management and control. In the assembly environment, you have a few design accelerator toolsets available like Frame generation, Bolted Connection, Keyways, gears, and shafts to name a few.  Calculators to assist with certain necessary calculations to be done within your assembly, for instance Axial Force, Elasticity, or Yield strength to name a few.

Inventor Presentation File [.ipn] Allows the user to Create Exploded Views of Assemblies or Animate visualization of component movements.

Inventor 2D detail Drawing File type[.idw] Details individual Parts, or Full assemblies and presentation Files. The AutoCAD[.dwg] non-associative drawing file converts to a standing AutoCAD file.

Excel Files[.xls] That drive I-Parts, or any other data, for instance Threads and Parts, or Table linked data can be imported in Inventor. Different File types can be exported, including different Image File types, Pdf and 3D pdf’s , other CAD formats for instance Parasolid, Pro-E or step files.  Files can be exported to RVT , DWF to name more options.
