What is iLogic and why use it?

As engineering designs become increasingly complex, the ability to automate repetitive tasks and create intelligent, adaptable models can provide a significant advantage. Autodesk Inventor iLogic is a powerful rules-based automation tool that allows designers and engineers to introduce intelligence into their models and assemblies.

iLogic is built into Autodesk Inventor and allows users to create rules that control model parameters, features, properties, and design behaviour. These rules are based on Visual Basic programming concepts, but users do not need to be experienced programmers to start creating useful automation.

Instead of manually changing multiple dimensions or features, a rule can automatically respond to a change and update the model accordingly. This makes it possible to create highly configurable designs from a single model.

Why Use iLogic?

One of the biggest advantages of iLogic is automation. Repetitive engineering tasks can be reduced or eliminated, allowing designers to spend more time on actual design work rather than manually managing model changes.

iLogic can also improve accuracy and consistency. Design rules and company standards can be embedded directly into models, helping reduce the possibility of manual errors and ensuring that designs behave consistently.

A single Inventor model can be configured to represent multiple sizes, variations, or product options. Parameters can drive dimensions, suppress or activate features, change materials, update iProperties, and control assembly configurations.

Another powerful feature is the ability to create iLogic Forms. Forms provide a simple, user-friendly interface for interacting with an intelligent model. Instead of asking a user to navigate through numerous parameters or understand how the underlying rules work, a form can present the required options in a clear and controlled interface.

For example, a designer could create a form allowing users to select a product size, material, configuration, or other design options. Once the selections are made, iLogic can process the information and automatically update the model. This makes complex parametric designs much easier for other members of the engineering team to use.

iLogic is not simply a tool for automating repetitive tasks. When implemented correctly, it can become an integral part of an organisation’s design methodology. By combining parameters, rules, forms, model configurations, and external data, engineers can develop intelligent designs that respond to defined requirements rather than relying entirely on manual input.
