When working in AutoCAD Plant 3D one of the most important aspects is to create piping that makes sense and works. Connection points, the correct bends and having the correct nozzles make sure that when going to sight you will not have a leaky installation.
In AutoCAD Plant 3D, Autodesk has made available certain specs and catalogs to be able to create the piping that you will need for your design. Before forging ahead lets get a definition of what a spec and catalog is.
A catalog, in AutoCAD Plant 3D is a database that contains every pipe and component that you might require when creating a pipe design of a specific standard. Think of dairy tube or HDPE.

A spec would be taking specific pipes or components to create a design. For instance you might only want piping that runs from 1 to 6 in. Maybe certain valves will only be used for the 5 and 6 in pipe and not the 1 to 4 in piping. The spec is more selective, like a shopping list for a dish you are preparing for dinner. The shop you are going to buy all the ingredients form would be your catalog as it has every ingredient you could possibly need.

Knowing this is important as AutoCAD Plant 3D does not have everything that you might require when trying to create your piping. With this in mind, you might end up having to create your own catalog to then be able to create your own spec. Luckily with the community that exists around the world, someone has probably created the entire catalog that you might require or even if it has been partially created, you can modify it and make it your own.
Creating a spec and catalog for your work can be tedious but with any template creation work, it will benefit you immensely down the line.
