When starting a project in AutoCAD plant 3D you will generally start off with the P&ID drawing and once you have the 2D piping and equipment you wil be using you will go onto the 3D piping. When creating the 3D piping with it’s 3D equipment you need to be aware of what inline equipment you inserted into your 2D P&ID as make sure you do not have too many or too few components between the 2D and 3D drawing. One of the ways that you can accomplish this is to do a manual count of which valve or reducer sits on which pipe line for both the 2D and 3D drawing. This is not a fun job. The other way that you can accomplish this is to use the functionality built into AutoCAD Plant 3D, like the P&ID line list command.

The P&ID line list command is a “bridge” between your 2D drawing and your 3D drawing. As you draw the 2D P&ID and tag the pipes drawn with a line number and the equipment that is place either inline or end of line, AutoCAD Plant builds up a database in the background and keeps a record of how they interact. This database can be called upon when you start to create your 3D piping and place the 3D equipment. The feature it uses is the AutoCAD P&ID Line list command.

Once activated it draws on that database and because the 2D symbols are mapped to 3D components, as you insert the 2D component, the 3D symbol is created in your DWG. Drawing this way and not separating the 2 workflows allows you to drive down time to getting the design finalised and out to site to start commissioning.
